What is an economic depression?

An economic depression is a severe and prolonged downturn in economic activity, that lasts several years or even decades. It is characterized by high levels of unemployment, low consumer spending, decreased investment, and a general decline in economic output. A depression is more severe than a recession and is marked by a significant contraction in the economy that lasts for an extended period.
